I just sent an e-mail to Ron "Boogiemonster" Gerber who does a very cool radio show called Crap from the Past on KFAI in Minneapolis and he mentioned that I was listening on the air! I also told him about my radio days at KUMM in Morris (which he seemed to think was near Winona -- can you even pick up KUMM in Winona?) which was very cool.

He has an extensive archive of every CFTP show he's done since 1992 on his Web site. The show I'm listening to now should be available as a podcast on his site in the next day or so.

Update: I just got an e-mail reply from Ron himself:

Joey - Very cool!  I told my KUMM story on the air...

I don't have any of those three songs, but it gives me stuff to look for!

The three songs I requested were "Little Girls" by Oingo Boingo, "Garden Party" by Marillion, and "The Animal Song" by The Europeans. I know the first two should be fairly easy to find either on CD or online, so maybe I'll reply to Ron later about those.

I've been playing around with GarageBand on my new iMac this weekend. My fiddling has resulted in a remix of Senator Ted Stevens' recent "Series of Tubes" speech about Net neutrality.

In addition to my adaptation of Stevens' speech, there are a couple of others out there, such as this amusing video. Thank you for inspiring us, Ted!

Manassas Park Unscripted: A Vizsla, a condominium, and a bilingual grocery store

I've escaped Jacksonville for the weekend and am now at my cousin's house in Manassas Park, Virginia enjoying the long weekend with some of my relatives. Today's experiences included a visit to a bilingual grocery store and a local dog kennel, since Tracy and her husband Mike acquired Ollie, a Hungarian Vizsla puppy, from Iowa about a week ago. Ollie has a LOT of energy, but he's a very curious pup and likes to chew on thinngs that he finds, such as Tracy's purse or one of my socks. I also got to see cousin Tim's condo that he bought over in Maryland which was very nice and makes me want to buy one of my own in JAX. After the condo tour it was time for a late lunch at Five Guys Burgers and Fries followed by a quiet evening at home.

I know I said I would meet a certain Very Important Person in my last entry; this was done a week ago last Saturday.

My sister and I meet Mickey Mouse at Disney World!

On a related note, I have a new icon courtesy of the fine folks at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom.

My next adventure will take place this coming weekend, when I visit my cousins in the Washington, DC area. No visits with Very Important People (in a worldly sense) are anticipated, though I will be seeing plenty of Very Important Relatives.

While this may not be quite as Earth-shattering as setharoo's upcoming two-month trip to Europe (I wish my company could do that!), I will be heading down to Walt Disney World in Orlando tomorrow night for a four-day long weekend, since my sister is playing in a soccer tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex. This will be my first time going to WDW and I'm pretty excited about it. I'll finally have my chance to meet Mickey Mouse in person!

If you're reading this and planning to graduate from UMM this coming weekend, you might want to reconsider. From CNN:

12-year undergrad postpones the real world -- again

WHITEWATER, Wisconsin (AP) -- Despite his 12 years as an undergraduate student, Johnny Lechner realized something was missing from his academic record: he'd never studied abroad.

And so, the 29-year-old perpetual student who was expected to finally graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater withdrew his application for graduation Monday, five days before commencement.

"I realized that if I went one more year, I could study abroad," Lechner said. "That's one thing I haven't done."

Lechner's extended academic career has made him a celebrity of sorts. His never-ending student life has been featured in newspapers and on network television shows, not to mention campus publications across the nation.

By this spring he had completed 234 college credits, or about 100 more than needed to graduate, and was taking seven more.

That qualified him for the "slacker tax," instituted this school year by the UW Board of Regents to help cover the state subsidy for students who stay long past the usual four or five years to earn an undergraduate degree.

It calls for students who exceed 165 total credit hours or 30 more than their degree programs require -- whichever is higher -- to pay double tuition.

Lechner said he didn't start out to be a long-term student, but it just developed once he realized how much fun he was having at college.

Had he graduated, he would have earned a liberal studies degree in education, communications, theater, health and women's studies.

Michelle Eigenberger, an editor at The Royal Purple, said Lechner may have achieved celebrity status, but most students are tired of it.

"It's getting old," she said. "For the sanity of the rest of the campus, we want him to get out of here."

As I was eating dinner tonight, I had Bruce Springsteen's We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions playing in the background courtesy of Napster's free music streaming (though I don't think I'd buy anything there). This is an excellent album that I'll need to buy for my iPod. According to the links from the album's Wikipedia entry, Bruce and his (non-E Street) band recorded the whole album live in two daylong recording sessions.
